ROPES

Words and music by Julie Snow

Oh I said to myself
You never will know just who you are in the this world unless you
Finally abandon the lot you were handed
And the story you still think is true

Oh the ropes will drop and the sky will open
And your tears will fall like rain
And the lies that once locked your heart in a prison
Will never be spoken again

I have seen it before
Those others all pushing their wagons of rocks to and fro
If you offer to help them, to lighten their load some
They will shake their heads sadly and go
Oh the ropes will drop and the sky will open

And your tears will fall like rain
And the lies that once locked your heart in a prison
Will never be spoken again

And who can say for sure when the time will come
For each of us to turn and face what we’re running from
Here is the question
I ask every morning the moment the sun hits my face

Will you let the light shine into all the darks corners
And clean out that shadowy place

Oh the ropes will drop and the sky will open
And your tears will fall like rain
And the lies that once locked your heart in a prison
Will never be spoken again
Will never be spoken
Will never be spoken again

BLACK BEAR

Words and music by Julie Snow

Can’t find my way out
Can’t find my way in
Can’t find my way through
Can’t think of any
Conceivable reason
To do the things I do

Well the light is gone, the trees are bare, a chill is in the wind
Oh that sweet September sun has slipped away again

Well I think that I will curl up
Just like a black bear
And I will sleep until the spring
Then when the sap flows
I will shake this sorrow
And I will see what the new year brings

Well a shadow creeps across the moon, I take it as a sign
To turn and face that hollow place that once was yours and mine
I think that I will curl up just like a black bear
And I will sleep until the spring

Well the hole your leaving left behind feels so deep and dark
And I try to walk around it but it tears me apart
And I try to hold on and I try to be strong
But the resolution slips away

And I think that I will curl up
Just like a black bear
And I will sleep until the spring
Then when the sap flows
I will shake this sorrow

And I will see what the new year brings
I will see what the new year brings
I will see what the new year brings

NO ORDINARY LOVE

You are my sanctuary, you are my strength
You are my parachute, I’d go to any length
To keep you safe and warm,  keep you by my side,
This is no ordinary love

Right from the start I was drawn to your light
Like a shooting star on a cold dark night
You knocked on my door, and I knew at first sight
This is no ordinary love

No ordinary love, no ordinary love
This is no ordinary love
What can I give you, what can I say
How can I thank you, show me the way
We sail on this sea and there’s a breeze every day
This is no ordinary love

Much funnier, much kinder, so much room to breathe
Even with bumps in the road that would make some people leave
But trouble made us stronger, and trouble made us see
This is no ordinary love

No ordinary love, no ordinary love
This is no ordinary love
No ordinary love, no ordinary love
This is no ordinary love

You are my sanctuary, you are my strength
You are my parachute, I’d go to any length
To keep you safe and warm,  keep you by my side

This is no ordinary love
This is no ordinary love
This is no ordinary, this is extraordinary
This is no ordinary love

THE PINK ONE

I said to my doctor
I don’t feel well
He said not to worry
I can give you a pill
What kind of pill can you give me
Well, let me see
There’s so many to choose from
It’s a panoply
I can give you the pink one
Or maybe the blue
Or you could take ‘em both together
To see what that might do

I  saw the couple on the TV
They were looking so grand
Sitting side by side in the bathtubs
They were holding hands
I saw the ad with the butterflies
Everybody sleeping so sound
And the one where the Mom’s so happy
Nothing’s gonna get her down
There’s a voice in the background
Saying there’s a risk or two
But if you want to feel better never mind all that
This is the pill for you

Dry mouth, head pain, double vision
Don’t drive your car to avoid a collision
You might gain weight or feel suicidal
But that’s unusual, you’re more liable
To feel like a million bucks
Like this is your lucky day
Every once in a while a little shortness of breath
Could lead to coma, or sometimes to death
We’re not exactly sure just why
But that’s no reason not to give it a try
Give it a try

I used to pray to the good Lord
But now I see
The new god is pharmaceuticals
They will set me free
They will lift me up
And they will set me straight
They will redeem my spirit
They will open the gates

This pill gives you super-powers
Believe you me, man, this will wow her
But if it should last much more than four hours
Better call your doctor or take a cold shower
We’re not exactly sure just why
But you might go blind or die
Well it might be your last roll in the hay
But wasn’t it great, you know, it lasted all day
We’re not exactly sure just why
But that’s no reason not to give it a try
We’re not exactly sure just why
But that’s no reason not to give a try
We’re not exactly sure
But that’s no reason, that’s no reason, that’s no reason
Not to give it a try

I said to my doctor
I don’t feel well
He said not to worry
I can give you a pill

CRACKS IN THE SKY

Sometimes it’s so dark, no light at the end of your tunnel
Sometimes it’s so cold, you’re chilled to the bone
Sometimes it’s so sad, you lost the best thing that you ever had
Sometimes it’s so hard, you just want to go home

You crawl into your bed, pull the covers up over your head
And you pray for relief, for a long, dreamless sleep
You have tried every way you know how to get out of this hole
But for now, you’re just in it too deep

But keep your eye on the cracks in the sky
Where an angel might slip through
And just when you thought all your chances were shot
She’ll wrap her soft wings around you

Her warm hand on your back, just a few words , or the sweet gift of silence
She’ll sit by your side, and she’ll wait for you to mend
In the end, there’s no medicine that can heal like the soft kiss of kindness
It seals up the dark hole, so you can start over again

You belong to the band of the broken hearted
They will open their arms to you
It’s a blessing and a privilege to keep their company
You will learn this too

So keep your eye on the cracks in the sky
Where an angel might slip through
And just when you thought all your chances were shot
She’ll wrap her soft wings
Oh she’ll wrap her soft wings
She’ll wrap her soft wings around you

BEAUTIFUL WORLD
words and music by Julie Snow

It’s a beautiful , beautiful, beautiful, beautiful world
It’s a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful world
It’s a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful world
It’s a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful world
It’s a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful world

If I forget, take me down to the sea
Stand me in the surf and let the waves wash over me
If I need to be reminded of what I’m doing here
I just bend down, pick up a shell, put it to my ear

It’s a beautiful, etc.

If I grow weary, take me to a tree
Let me feel the cool caress of shade surrounding me
When I was young I would climb so high and I’d cling like a vine
And I could always hear a heartbeat, if I could quiet mine

It’s a beautiful, etc.

When I’m sad and lonely, point up to the sky
Where all the clouds like clipper ships go softly sailing by
At sunrise and sunset they will paint the world in fire
So I can be reminded of my heart’s true desire

It’s a beautiful, etc.

And I am just a guest here,  let me do my best,
To care for you like you care for me
Oh and if I need forgiveness,  put me on a boat
Down the Colorado, through the Canyon let me float
The walls rise up on either side, six million years of wear
All my trials and tribulations just drift off in the air

It’s a beautiful, etc.

NO TEARS FOR YOU AND ME

What we gonna do when the well runs dry
There’s sand in the water already
Used to be a guarantee that the water was always ready
To fill our cups and water our crops and keep us cool and clean
But it looks like the farm is failing
Yeah the family farm is failing
Yeah it looks like the farm is failing

It’s the end of Daddy’s dream
It has not rained in over two years
Not even a sprinkle
Daddy’s face is caving in, oh wrinkle after wrinkle
He keeps staring at the sky muttering his prayers
But I can tell my Dad’s in Hell
It’s so easy to tell my Dad’s in Hell
Yeah I can tell my Dad’s in Hell,
And his faith has left him there

Oh why didn’t we listen
Oh why didn’t we learn
What made us so blind we could not see
Now Mother Nature has no tears
They’ve been drying up for years
Mother Nature has no tears to cry for you and me

Even the ground is sinking down
Out in the pasture
Collapsing on that empty space where water once was captured
But nothing grows there anymore
The trees are brown and bare
Well I wonder when the time will come
Yeah it looks like soon the time will come
Oh I wonder when the time will come
For us to move from here

Chorus (2X)

LAUGH OR CRY
Words and Music by Julie Snow

Well I wake up in the morning
Turn on the news
Make myself some coffee
Take a long look at you
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

All the years together
The pleasure and pain
The more things change
The more they stay the same
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

Gray hair, weak knees, trouble sleeping
How many memories are worth keeping
Remember the days we thought the world
Would get better and better and better and better
But now I see exactly how it will be
And I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

The wheel keeps turning
The pendulum swings
You hold too tight
You might lose everything
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

Thank god for kindness
Thank god for love
Thank god if
There is a god above
And I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

All the ways we keep on trying
In like a lamb, out like a lion
Brave the storm,  beat the drum
Well I’m not finished, no I’m not done
But in the end, well it just begins again
And I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

(repeat)

THE DRUM THAT BEATS FOR ME

Every beat of every drum
Is always the same except for one
That’s the drum that beats for me

Under my skin, in every hair
Under my fingertips, always there
That’s the drum that beats for me

There’s a pre-determined number
A card drawn at my birth
No bargains to be made
For what it’s worth

Cutting through the thickened air
Even in sadness and despair
That’s the drum that beats for me

Buried in blankets of silence
In a brazen act of defiance
Still it beats for me

There’s a pre-determined number
A card drawn at my birth
No bargains to be made
For what it’s worth

Do I dance enough, do I dance enough
Move my feet to the beat every day
If I dance enough, can I keep the darkness at bay

Sometimes the beating is so strong
I hardly know where I belong
That’s the drum that beats for me

From a different time and a different race
Landed here so out of place
That’s the drum that beats for me

There’s pre-determined number
A card drawn at my birth
No bargains to be made
For what it’s worth

Do I dance enough, take a chance enough
Move my feet to the beat every day
If I dance enough, can I keep the darkness at bay
Do I dance enough, take a chance enough
Move my feet to the beat every day
If I dance enough, can I keep the darkness at bay
Can I keep the darkness at bay

LIE DOWN IN THE RAIN

I know I’m always telling you that you should stand and fight
That sorrow is the enemy, it sucks up all the light
But today I saw a herd of cattle and I think they’ve got it right
We should all lie down in the rain

The hereford, the holsteins, the deer and caribou
They always seem to know just exactly what to do
They gather close together and just as if on cue

They all lie down in the rain
We should all lie down in the rain
It’s a futile endeavor fighting the pain
We should do what our four legged friends know to do
Gather together and lie down in the rain

So let the tears wash over us, let the heavens cry
Let the long gray shadows drift on by
The ones with fur and four legs
Oh they never do ask why

They just all lie down in the rain
We should all lie down in the rain
It’s a futile endeavor fighting the pain
We should do what our four legged friends know to do
Gather together and lie down in the rain
We should what our four legged friends know to do
Gather together and lie down in the rain

How do they know to yield and wait for the storm to pass
To lie down in the comfort of a bed of leaves or grass
I think somehow they understand that the darkness cannot last
When they all lie down in the rain

LIKE A RIVER

I know what goodness can do in this world
I know what goodness can do in this world
Just a knock upon my back door
Just a simple cup of tea
When you put your hand on my shoulder
Well it means the world to me

So why can’t we just let it flow
Like a river
Why can’t we just let it go
Let the dam break

I know what trouble can do in this world
I know what trouble can do in this world
Just another demon morning
Just another stolen dream
Can turn you into a shadow of yourself
No in between

So why can’t we just let it flow
Like a river
Why can’t we just let it go
Let the dam break
Let love be your teacher
Let love be your guide
You’ll see you have no enemy
Except the one inside

I know what kindness can do in this world
I know what kindness can do in this world
You came, I did not call you
You stayed to keep me company
I would have called you a stranger
Before you taught me to see

So why can’t we just let it flow
Like a river
Why can’t we just let it go
Let the dam break

RELAX YOUR MIND
by Huddy Ledbetter

Relax your mind, relax your mind
Make you live a great long time
Sometimes, you got to relax your mind
(repeat)

When the light turns green
Oh put your foot on the gasoline
One time, you got to relax your mind
When the light turns red
Shove your breaks down to the bed
One time, you got to relax your mind

Relax your mind, relax your mind
Make you feel so fine sometimes
Sometimes, you got to relax your mind

When you drive that automobile
Keep your eye on that old windshield
That’s the time you got to relax your mind

There was a man
Crossed the railroad tracks
Ohh boy, he forgot to relax
That time, he should have relaxed his mind

Relax your mind, relax your mind
Make you feel so fine sometimes
Sometime you got to relax your mind
Relax your mind, relax your mind
Make you live a great long time
Sometimes, you got to relax your mind
